Seattle’s city council recently voted to cut police funding by half. Baltimore, Hartford, Conn., and Portland, Ore., have also trimmed law enforcement budgets, and other jurisdictions are sure to follow. While the movement to take police off the streets may have moral intentions, the consequences of doing so can be deeply troubling.
Just recently in Seattle, security guards brought in to protect the parks due to depleted police ranks abandoned their positions after only a few hours of heckling and abuse.
